Bear Creek Oasis Trailhead 【2025-2027】

Lena wrote her own: Lena, August 26. Water clear. Deer visited. Cottonwoods still standing. Then she added, without quite deciding to: Hope held.

The right-hand track dipped into a shallow ravine. She took it. Dust billowed behind her like a yellow banner. After a mile, the road ended at a collapsed stock fence and a single wooden post with a weathered plaque:

She shouldered her daypack—two liters of water, a sandwich, a worn copy of Desert Solitaire —and stepped over the fence. The trail was less a path and more a suggestion: a braid of deer tracks and old cattle trails winding through cheatgrass and basalt outcrops. bear creek oasis trailhead

Bear Creek wasn't much of a creek. In August, it was a thread of silver slipping between dark rocks, no wider than her arm. But along its banks, willows grew head-high, and three enormous cottonwoods raised a green cathedral dome against the bleached sky. The oasis .

Later, lying on her back on the warm rock, Lena noticed something carved into the cottonwood’s trunk. Not initials or hearts. A date: June 12, 1953 . And beneath it, in smaller letters: Water found. Hope held. She ran her fingers over the grooves. Someone else, seventy years ago, had stood exactly here, thirsty and probably lost, and had felt the same shock of green in the brown. Lena wrote her own: Lena, August 26

No parking lot. No restrooms. Just a silence so complete Lena could hear her own pulse.

Most entries just said Yes . One from last spring: Creek running high. Found a sand dollar in the mud. No ocean for 200 miles. Another: First time in five years. Cried a little. Cottonwoods still standing

The hike back felt shorter. The sun hung lower, painting the buttes gold and violet. At the trailhead post, Lena paused. Someone had added a small tin mailbox since she arrived, nailed to the back of the wooden plaque. Inside, a spiral notebook and a chewed-up pencil. She flipped through: hikers’ names, dates, and a single column for “Oasis sighting?”
