But he didn’t leave. Instead, he pulled up a chair and sat across from her, watching as she began to stitch. The apartment was quiet except for the whir of a box fan and the distant clank of the garage air compressor kicking on downstairs.

“Of this.” He gestured vaguely at the apartment, her belly, the world outside their thin walls. “Me. Bein’ a dad. All of it.”

He grinned, missing the metaphor entirely. “Nah, it’s easy. Watch.”

Mandy looked up, surprised. “That’s actually… not stupid.”

“Because I knew you’d be mad about the dress, and donut holes are better at forgiveness than flowers.”

He produced a sewing kit from a drawer labeled “junk” (next to “more junk”). His meaty fingers fumbled with the needle. After three attempts to thread it—each one ending with him licking the thread and missing—Mandy snatched it from him.

“The thread stuff ?” Mandy’s voice climbed. “This isn’t a blown radiator, Georgie. It’s a fullrip . That’s not a stitch—it’s a divorce of fabric.”

She resumed sewing, slower now. “Every day,” she admitted. “I wake up and think… what did we do? We’re kids, Georgie. I’m gonna be a mom, and I can’t even keep my clothes from falling apart.”
