The data on fatal violence is stark: the Human Rights Campaign (2023) reported that the majority of reported anti-LGBTQ homicides were of trans women, predominantly Black and Latina. This specific intersection of racism, transmisogyny, and poverty demands a distinct advocacy framework not always prioritized by mainstream gay organizations. Despite tensions, the alliance remains indispensable. The conservative backlash against LGBTQ rights—exemplified by “bathroom bills,” bans on gender-affirming care for minors, and anti-drag laws—increasingly targets trans people as the vanguard. In response, many LGB organizations have explicitly affirmed “trans rights are human rights.” Furthermore, queer theory (e.g., Butler, 1990) has productively destabilized fixed categories of sex, gender, and desire, providing intellectual grounds for deeper solidarity.
