Unlike many of his peers who rushed into Silicon Valley-style consumer electronics, Emmerik spent the first five years of his career working in a niche furniture restoration workshop in Antwerp. That hands-on experience with joinery, patina, and material decay fundamentally shaped his professional ethos: “You cannot design the future unless you understand how the past endures.”

In 2021, Stefan Emmerik partnered with the Danish brand Nordic Matter to produce a limited run of 500 desks. The desk featured a birch plywood surface treated with a natural iron acetate solution (giving it a unique grey, weathered look) mounted on a recycled aluminum chassis. The result? Every single desk sold out in 48 hours. More importantly, the desk comes with a “Buyback Guarantee.” Nordic Matter will repurchase the desk at 70% of its original price, disassemble it, and melt down or re-mill the parts for a new generation of products.
