On the 30th of December, 2016, 12-year-old Katelyn Nicole Davis from Cedartown, Georgia, hanged herself in her garden. The tormented young girl live streamed the heart-breaking event. After the footage went viral, police were powerless to take it down.

Maya looked at her own hands on the keyboard. They weren’t shaking anymore. The to-do list pinned to her monitor—15 items, all “URGENT”—seemed to recede, becoming small and gray, like an old newspaper. She saw her reflection in the dark window beside her desk. It started as a warmth behind her sternum, as if someone had turned on a gentle space heater inside her ribs. Then her posture shifted—not forced, but natural, like a sapling straightening toward the sun. Her shoulders dropped. Her jaw unclenched. And for the first time in 427 days, she blinked without the dry scrape of exhaustion. “You don’t click a button,” Maya said
