Pastor Jeff blinked. “Well, God’s ways are mysterious.”

The doorbell rang. Pastor Jeff entered with the hesitant cheer of a man who knew he was outmatched. He sat across from Sheldon, opened a Bible, and smiled. “Sheldon, let’s talk about faith.”

The Unlikely Variable

“Help what? My soul is a biological construct, Mother. It doesn’t have a mass or a location.” Pastor Jeff blinked

The Cooper house hummed with its usual controlled chaos. Mary was refereeing a disagreement between Georgie and Missy over the last slice of pie, while George Sr. stared at a football game he wasn't really watching. Upstairs, Sheldon sat before his laptop, the faint whir of the fan accompanying the BRRip file of The Attenborough Collection he’d just finished analyzing.

Specifically, his mother had just announced that Pastor Jeff was coming over for dinner to discuss Sheldon’s “spiritual development.” Sheldon had run the numbers: spiritual development = 0% empirical data, 100% metaphorical guesswork. He’d rather derive quadratic equations in the dark. He sat across from Sheldon, opened a Bible, and smiled

“Mysterious is code for ‘I don’t know,’” Sheldon replied. “In science, we say ‘insufficient data.’”
